  Used To Think Of This Site As Family

Reality just hit me again. It is someones personal property, like all the others, to do with as they wish, any way they wish. The dream died.

  This should be sent to the papers...

I feel we have all been violated!

Very unfair.

He´s actually evolved a little. Even though I still mostly disagree with him he doesn´t seem to be here for the sole purpose of pissing off anyone who isn´t a far FAAAAAAAARRRRRR right conservative

  LOL...

Yes, Big Bird was such an anomaly that he more often seemed to be a parody of himself.

But on a more important note, I don´t know what´s up with C2 or why he was demoted but absent some sort of internal problem that we can´t see, his demotion was analogous to Shortnews shooting itself in the foot. I´ve been scolded by him a number of times and my occasional faux pas have been pointed out to me with the most sincere and benevolent reminders one could expect. Ix mentioned in another thread that C2 was a very diligent fact checker and I have oft called him a grammar, spelling and curse nazi in jest. I know that I wouldn´t have been able to call him those things if he weren´t both doing his job as a volunteer and if I wasn´t sure that he would take my jabs as good natured ribbing among friends.

To be sure, whether this was C2´s decision or that of SN management that he no longer be a moderator on this site, this community and this company have lost a very valuable asset. My hope is that we don´t loose an even more valuable friend.

And as for Ix, I feel much the same way, save the fact that I haven´t talked with or learned as much about him as I have C2. Nonetheless, he is another man who I respect tremendously for both his contribution to this site and his friendship.

Ix, I understand your frustration and I wouldn´t wish yours or C2´s on my worst enemy. But with that being said, I would wholly respect your decision to move on from your post at this site for something more suited for you and your talents. I would only ask that you remain in touch with the group of people you like here and even me :), if you do choose a better avenue. Especially because I want to see the progress of your home building venture and because my wife and I are planning to have a clandestine meeting with CaptainJane in the down under, so we´ll need a discrete location to facilitate our rendezvous. ;)

In all seriousness though, I don´t like what is happening at this site for a good many reasons. I suspect that the .com branch of the site is probably not paying for itself in that the number of users typically logged in pales in comparison to the .de site. From a business standpoint, I understand that a branch or department that continues to create negative cashflow must be either restructured or eliminated. What I don´t know however, is what marketing tools were available to SN.com vs. SN.de. Nor do I understand why a greater effort was not made on marketing the product to its target audience. In the world of marketing, the web is without question the least expensive (and easiest) tool one can use to create name recognition and hits so that leads me to think that the principals of this company who left its management in March, 2007, did not leave in place a well trained, well equipped marketing department which could quite easily have been simply a few people sitting behind home PCs and spreading the word of Shortnews in the myriad Yahoo Groups and other such forums out there. There are countless blogs that discuss news topics and there are also ways in which to share a link to Shortnews that wouldn´t likely be seen as spam.

Perhaps Kate was charged with those tasks and perhaps she either failed at them or she lacked the necessary support from above in order to implement those marketing strategies. If my suspicion is remotely correct, I would have to guess the latter was the roadblock she faced in growing .com´s membership. Surely it wasn´t her handling of members because like my interactions with C2 and Ix, those I had with her were always respectful and helpful, I like to think in both directions in some cases.

In short, I have come to view this website not so much as a news compiler but more as a clearinghouse of differing opinions wherein one can actually debate and learn rather than simply spew talking points across political, ideological or moral and ethical isles to no productive end.

The team that was in place here last week not only moderated the debates and corrected the various errors, copyright violations, hateful speach, blue language, et al. They also fostered and facilitated the intellectual growth of those of us who come here for that purpose.

I´m sure that a new crew of people can be chosen who will be able to offer the same talents, although I also know that assembling them would be a most difficult task and that SN.com would invariably suffer a huge decline in readership and active participation.

In closing, the lack of announcing C2´s demotion speaks volumes about how the principles of this establishment view both their customers and their employees/volunteers. And make no mistake, that view isn´t a good one from my house...

  @ all

Hi there!

Kate has left ShortNews for personal reasons. In prep for the time after that we decided, that we want to have the team in closer contact to us.

caution is a longterm member and a talented news-author. I appreciate that!

But I personally have had 0 contact to him. That´s not the way of cooperation I desire.

He can continue his news contributions as a user. But working with our admin is sensible and needs clear rules. Therefore is direct contact required.

  by: hesekiel25     08/09/2010 09:58 AM
  @hesekiel

I don´t and wouldn´t presume to know why you made the decision you did and ultimately it is none of anyone´s business, to be sure. However, your timing and method demonstrates poor judgment and raised a lot of unnecessary questions not only in the eyes of your readers but also in those of your last remaining volunteer on this forum.

And I agree, communication is key to a smooth running operation. Perhaps you should have exercised the same with your readers and other staff before arbitrarily demoting C2.

Contact? Caution2 had direct contact with the *users* of this site for years, working his ass off to make SN a better place. To demote him with no explanation to the users who have befriended him looks like you couldn´t care less what we think.

  @hesekiel25

Leaving other issues to the side for a moment, I have some questions/points regarding Caution2´s demotion.

1. My understanding was that Caution2 and I answered directly to Kate. I´m unclear in what situation he would contact you directly. The areas he took responsibility in hardly lent themselves to going up the chain of command. Issues of banning are almost always settled by the team in contact with the users. If we had known you wanted "Dear hesekiel25, checked 22 summaries today. Three of them were awful, the spelling was bad and the grammar was worse - it was hard to work out what they were even trying to say. In other news we caught a user we have banned four times trying to sneak back under a new user name..." on a regular basis we probably could have obliged.
2. Following on from my first point I only contacted you directly (assuming you are who I´m pretty sure you are) at Kate´s directive or when a situation arose when Kate was unavailable.
3. Given that he didn´t provide you with the level of contact you require did you contact him about the situation and give him the opportunity to remedy the problem?
4. I seriously doubt my other newscheckers even knew you existed until a few days ago yet they were demoted too.
5. Given that you have taken away all my regular people who check the news will you be in on a daily basis to go over each summary correcting the grammar and spelling, fact checking the summary, and thoroughly checking for plagiarism? I´ve written 20-something summaries in the last 24 hours. I cannot do everything.

  by: ixuzus     08/09/2010 04:55 PM
  @hesekiel25

Wow,

That was a half-assed lame excuse for an explanation if I ever saw one. Enjoy the irreparable damage you´ve done to this community in the name of "cooperation" - what a load.

Goodbye Shortnews. And thank you Ixuzus, at least you always cared enough to fight for us.

  This is just pitiful.

This is not the shortnews I´ve grown to love. With Kate "retiring" and caution getting demoted due to an unreasonable hesekiel, I feel I have little reason to continue to participate at shortnews.

Henceforth I will no longer be making comments of any kind, to the forum or to stories.

I will no longer participate in posting news articles either.

Good luck shortnews, I hope you can consider to survive in some positive way after you are eventually ran into the ground.

as the two comments above me. Those ´time to make a change´ people when they come in make me sick.

  by: John E Angel     08/09/2010 08:36 PM
  Wow

I think I´ll also have to echo the sentiments of the last few users. I posted my first summary a month or two ago after being a menber for at least a couple of years. I think I would have written more summaries as my confidence grew. It´s a shame I won´t now.

I was a fairly sporadic poster on here so I don´t know how many people would even recognise my username but I´m going to stay in touch with a couple of users. If anyone would like to keep in contact at all I´ll pop back over the next week or two and check my messages.

You need people like Caution and Ix to help you with the site. I shall explain... if the people who are going to work the site are from where ever you are from, then judging by your comment their grasp of pigeon English should be excellent. You need full time English speakers for an English language site. Don´t mean to be rude, just an observation.

  by: ThinLizzy   08/10/2010 12:22 AM
  I sure know you. @ Dark. :)

I do not believe we have the full facts on these demotions or the full facts of us losing Kate. I wonder if our new admin can enlighten us as why they feel it is appropriate to replace these hard working, caring people. OUR FRIENDS and you expect to step in their shoes and us to write for them. Why did you lack the respect of speaking to the people here? without any warning.
I think a vote would be a fair; this would be the only democratic and correct way of resolve! What do our friends and fri-enimies in SN think? Let us have a vote.
Yes I know the owners are thinking of their own pockets and trying use the staff they already have, but without being offensive in any way at all, how many of you use English as your first language? Without the correct use of the English language needed, it could have a detrimental effect on a English language site. It would certainly lower the standards of fair few of my summaries.

  @Hesekeil25

Hold on a sec. You call yourself an administrator? Have you ever supervised anything in your life (fast food doesn´t count)? I´m head administrator for a company (600+ employees) and communication starts at the top. Its Admins job to let the workers know what is expected of them, and admin´s job to create lines of communication with the employees. If there was a lack of communication, it´s your fault for not making over communication part of the business. You never even gave Caution a heads up, or a reason for his demotion prior to taking action. As you sit on your high and mighty admin throne, don´t forget what it is that makes SN. People come here because of the friendship and interaction they get with the other users. Caution2 was always the first to help and to answer questions. His communication with the users was excellent. This tells me that the blame (for the lack of communication between yourself and Caution) falls in your lap.
If you made clear your communication requirements to caution IN THE BEGINNING and he refused to communicate, then I can see a reason for demotion. I don´t see it as being that way though. Say and think what you want Hesekeil25, but your actions were very unprofessional and your follow-up was pathetic.
I will not be contributing to SN anymore.

  by: captainJane     08/10/2010 04:34 AM
  Not contributing either

I have been on this site for 7 years (active for 3) & the thing that pulled me in after those 4 years of lurking was how much I have grown & learned from the people who contribute to the site.

Sad to see all these AWESOME people leave. I feel like I am losing family.

  by: vhan     08/10/2010 07:23 AM
  @my peeps

I´m usually the first one on the bandwagon and I totally respect ix and lois and c2 and I´m as pissed as everyone else BUT we don´t even know the new mngmnt yet. I´m as insistent as everyone that c2 be back on board and I may not even surf here on their loss but there´s a pretty good chance that hesekiel is brand new at this and let´s not minimize the weight of an unfired caliber. Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge. Not just yet.

  by: VermiciousG     08/10/2010 07:56 AM
  @verm

good point. But imo they already fired a caliber for us to weigh when they demoted caution and then said it was because he didn´t communicate properly. (I explained the communication issue earlier). when admin comes in w/o introduction, w/o explanation and starts booting admired mods...it gives us something with which to weigh the caliber of their bullets.
Or maybe I´m just jumping the gun.
OK ADMIN, because of verm, I´m giving you guys a chance. I strongly recommend reversing your decisions pertaining to caution. As I said before, it is ADMIN´s job to communicate the standards for the flow of communication. Just admit you were wrong in the way you handled the situation, reinstate caution and things can start to calm down at sn. Otherwise- hasta la vista...baby.

  by: shaohu     08/10/2010 01:37 PM
  I do not know about the rest of you...

but this has depressed me. Had these bosses listened to us and our admins we may have had a lot more people and a far more reaching site. How could they deny us everything then complain about hits? That is a pathetic.

Had we had half of the tools Germany had, this would never have happened.

  I´m So Bloody Lost !!

Hi all,

I have been busy the last couple months preparing, moving, and getting work. When I finally get back here, I see that everything has changed With many threads pertaining to this fact, I am in a confuggle of not knowing exactly what has transpired.

Will someone throw me a life line of knowledge? There is no more Kate, or caution? Huh? Are they disappearing, not to be a part of SN, or just stepping down from duties? Has SN been bought out?

Thanks,

  by: Tumbleweed   08/15/2010 06:06 PM
  No...

they have not willingly left. They were conned and we should have to accept their decision as being the correct way.

Sn is owned by a company by GmbH & Co. KG.
Someone there thinks they will make more cash by destroying all the work done by our respected admin.

See you around. @Tumble

  by: captainJane     08/15/2010 07:07 PM
  @Jane

Just to clarify something....

GmbH & Co. KG is a German term used to describe the structure of a company. It means, in English, that Shortnews is a limited liability partnership or LLP, in our respective countries.

Therefore, shortnews.com is owned by Shortnews GmbH & Co. KG.

  @Tumbleweed

It appears that Kate was asked to leave, although the story we got was that her leaving was for personal reasons. That would have been a believable story were is not for the fact that a mere few days later, caution2 was demoted as a moderator and subsequently, all newscheckers lost their privileges and finally, Ixusus.
The only explanation given for any of these arbitrary "firings" was that caution2 had not been in proper contact with management, although it seems that even he wasn´t informed that he was to keep in contact with a manager whom he´d never been told to keep in contact with.

As for why all this has occurred, it´s anyone´s guess, since the current administrators of this site have made clear through their actions that they couldn´t care less if their customers know what´s going on.

Hope that helps...

BB

  by: bbeljefe     08/15/2010 07:33 PM
  I hope...

this quirky little story of ours gets into the odd story section on yahoo. It could, as it is linked to other businesses.

My first question what would they feel knowing we have been treated like this?

This site is being held back by ego it always was, this incredible ego has lost millions that could have been earned in advertising all because of an inadequate site. Lucky for Shortnews.com that it had people keeping everything going by their own brainpower; because having to completely rely on head office they stood little chance.

Here is something interesting that I found via Bb’s thread in here in forums...

1: Poor marketing: Successful businesses are ones that understand and meet the requirements of their customers you must know who your client is. You need to learn and master marketing and make sure that you track the success or failure of each marketing technique you use, then dump those that aren’t working.
Warning, this is not working!

2: Lack of finance: Insufficient finance often means that businesses are unable to take opportunities available to them, or having to compromise resulting in going for high cost solutions to problems, rather than lower cost ones that often yield a greater competitive advantage.

3: Failure to embrace new technologies and new developments: In a fast changing world leading businesses are ones that make best use of advanced modern technologies in an appropriate way. That allows them to work more efficiently
This is just the tip of the iceberg of the information Bb has provided...

Thank you again, you know who you are... for teaching me to kick back by writing; instead of making a useless noise. I make mistakes but i can live with this, it was so impossible before! x

I have been a while for a while, and I know I am not a huge contributer (except to maybe a list of poor spellers), but yeah. Shortnews just lost my readership. Looks like whatever the head peacock did it really angered all the others and now none of the people who I enjoyed reading will even post here anymore.

Goodbye SN. You were great while you lasted.

too many moderators and not enough trolls. they wouldn´t let bigmeanies or superchicken join. not enough news writers and too much of bbelcrappie.
many made a cameo appearance but few wrote news shorts. also they kept the site underground; maybe they were afraid shortnews would bite them. guilty of pulling everyone they could from here. i was all alone here by myself at times. when that site died most never returned here. some trickle in on occasions. i thought i read lois lane complaining about getting banned at shortnews. how cool is that?

I never knew what happened to this site, I just read the news...until it dried up. About the last change I saw was those stupid arse avatars.

I had a little problem with a rating, and I tried to get help. I might as well try to get help from a squatter´s site that says "what you need, when you need it."

Personally I am quite content with the Y2K format, but the news and the comments, and the moderation, well, obviously are unacceptable.

I don´t understand that comment about cooperation. "We´d prefer someone in Germany to do this work, or no one at all."

Well, I guess Shortnews.de pays the server bill!
