Man Catches 124-lb Catfish

ALTON, Ill - Fisherman Tim Pruitt found that the catch of the day was no small fry. The man snagged a blue catfish weighing in at a staggering 124 pounds. The catch is a new world record.

The state record was only 85 pounds and the previous world record holder weighed in at 121 pounds, eight ounces. Pruitt's fish was officially weighed in the presence of conservation police officer.

The results of the weighing and measuring will be sent to the International Game Fish Association, at which time the record should become official. The catfish was measured at 58 inches long and 44 inches around. It took half an hour to reel it in.

Really glad to see he kept the fish alive
Put it on display for a short time and then turn it loose. The fish at Cabelas don’t look very good after a few months in the tank. This behemoth should be allowed to breed...a lot.

  Fish Fry
The record breaking fish caught in the Mississippi River died on the way to Cabela's Outfitter store, where it was to be put on display.

  DO THE RIGHT THING
if there is a fish fry...it should be conducted at a homeless shelter. That way you can know for sure some kids are going to sleep w/a full stomach that night..

  LOL!
I'm sure it bred a lot during its lifetime.

Maybe now people will flock to Alton, IL to fish.

Funny how the Chicago Tribune thinks Alton is part of Chicago just because it's in Illinois. It's actually a suburb of St. Louis, MO.

  on TV tonight
they estimated the fish to be about 30 years old.

I was only kidding about the fish fry, I have a feeling he will be hanging on a wall in the same shop he was being transported to.

As much handling that fish went through, I am not surprised he died. As an ex-fish breeder, stress and loosing their slime coat and water changed can easily do a fish in.

I have never had catfish, I don't think I will ever have catfish, other than in a tank. I heard they are gritty...

about Alton (IL lesson for those not in IL)
I live closer to Alton than any Chicagoian...and I'm about an hour away.

The thing about Chicago Tribune is they have always reported news in IL at a hard slant. I was staying in a suberb and read the paper once and saw something about southern IL. Getting excited I later learned they were talking about a place near springfield...which is about 2 and so hours away from what is really considered southern IL.

On WGN southern IL was like Effingham...

For those who don't live in IL, or are too lazy for a map; Chicago is 6 hours away from Carbondale, which is the biggest city in "southern IL" Alton is right by STL, and its considered to be Metro East. Springfield is closer to the center of IL, but its considered "southern" by those in Chicago. Chicago is of course at the northwest tip.

Thats why southern IL is trying to seperate from IL entirely...we get the scraps. Our schools are horrible, hosiptials shutting down, roads are dangerous, doctors leaving because of mediacal malpractices....

  psssst 2 hotrock
Chicago is northeast. I am sure that is what you meant.
:)

I've lived in Illinois for 5 years and I still am not sure where I am for certain. (I usually say some where in the center)
Thanks for the lesson, I didn't know how big Carbondale was.

  @whisper
I feel dumb for that mistake, I was watching parts of the sox game and saw northwest indiana on the commerical and accidently typed the northwest part. (thank goodness for directv...only games shown on cable down here are those damn rams and cards)

but yea, carbondale has SIU, and its like the most diverse campus in IL. I talk to some of the students from other countries and they think that chicago and STL are the only two cities in the midwest basically.
