Interpreters in Sweden Spoke Wrong Language

Officials in Sweden hired interpreters to communicate with migrants from Romania but the translators spoke Romany, a language with roots in Roma and Sinti culture, instead of Romanian.

"Romanians don´t understand Romany any more than a Swede does," Lucian Bagiu, a Romanian language expert says. Romanian is a language that evolved from Latin, while Romany has Sanskrit roots.

The immigrants said they didn´t understand a word the interpreters said and Romanian-speaking interpreters had to be brought in.
