Fish Toxin Could Be Used for Treating Cancer

Medical researchers in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany claim that fish toxin could be used as a potential medication for cancer.

Researchers identified a toxin injection machine in the Yersinia ruckeri genome and showed that the toxin Afp18 is an enzyme that deactivates the switch protein RhoA, which is responsible for many vital processes in the cells of humans and fish.

Afp18 was injected into zebra fish embryos, which blocked the cell division and caused the actin filaments in the fish cells to collapse. The reseachers concluded that the fish toxin has great therapeutic potential in cancer treatment.
