Bumble Bee Foods to Pay $6 Million for Employee Who Died in Oven


Bumble Bee Foods has agreed to pay a $6 million settlement over the 2012 death of a 62-year-old employee who was burned alive in an industrial oven while working at the company´s Santa Fe Springs plant.

Jose Melena´s family will receive $1.5 million and $3.5 million will be spent on the installment of automated ovens that won´t require workers to go inside.

Bumble Bee will also pay the Los Angeles County District Attorney´s Environmental Enforcement Fund $750,000 and another $750,000 in fines, penalties and court costs.
