Spinal Implant May Banish Back Pain

Researchers have created flexible implants that could be a breakthrough for sufferers of chronic back pain.

The scientists at Washington University Pain Center say the device implanted into a patient’s spinal cord could end the reliance on painkillers. The device reportedly sends electrical impulses to painful areas of the back and other parts of the body.

"Our eventual goal is to use this technology to treat pain in very specific locations by providing a kind of ´switch´ to turn off the pain signals long before they reach the brain," says Dr. Robert Gereau.
