Seaworld on Monday announced plans to phase out its controversial orca shows at its theme park in San Diego by the end of 2016.
The decision is a reaction to declining visitor numbers and the park´s battered image. The company has faced heated criticism since the release of the 2013 documentary film “Blackfish", which shows mistreatment of killer whales at its parks.
Only in August, Seaworld said it will double the space available for its 11 orcas. The California Coastal Commission approved the plans but said Seaworld is not allowed to breed any of its 11 orcas which would eventually end any future orca attractions.
