Study: Texts Ending With a Period Seem "Less Sincere"

A study by researchers at Binghamton University found that texts that end with a period are perceived to be less sincere than messages that do not.

Messages with exclamation marks, on the other hand, were found to be more sincere. "It makes sense that texters rely on what they have available to them — emoticons, deliberate misspellings that mimic speech sounds and, according to our data, punctuation," researcher Celia Klin explains.

Klin and her team presented 126 undergraduates with a series of one-word text messages ending with various forms of punctuation.
