World´s Largest Canyon Found Under Arctic Ice

Scientists at Durham University in England say they may have discovered the world´s largest canyon system, several times longer than the Grand Canyon, while studying subglacial landscape in Princess Elizabeth land in East Antarctica.

While not visible to the naked eye, the canyon is a staggering 621 miles long and 0.6 miles deep in some places. The researchers also found a vast subglacial lake measuring more than 482 square miles.

"This is a region of the Earth that is bigger than the UK and yet we still know little about what lies beneath the ice," lead researcher Stewart Jamieson says.
