Researchers Identify First Brain Region Affected by Alzheimer´s Disease

Scientists at the University of Southern California say they have identified the region of the brain which Alzheimer´s disease strikes first.

The locus coeruleus is known for its high interconnectedness to the entire brain and regulating blood vessel activity in the brain.

It releases norepinephrine, the neurotransmitter that helps regulate heart rate, attention, memory and cognition. "Activation of the locus coeruleus-norepinephrine system by novelty and mental challenge throughout one´s life may contribute to cognitive reserve," the researchers say.
