A group of 12 people were arrested in France after being discovered using the Red Cross refugee centre at the Channel Tunnel entrance to smuggle people into the UK. It is thought that they have helped hundreds enter the UK illegaly through the tunnel
The smuggling ring, which was was broken in July last year, earned thousands of pounds by getting people into trucks, trains and boats, basically anything going into the UK. The operators were given jail terms of between 4 and 6 years.
On Christmas Day last year, 500 people tried to cross the Channel Tunnel from France into the UK on foot. Just 150 arrests were made.
