TV Show Helps Solve Rape Case-Points Out Evidence Kit Was Never Tested

In December, 1989, Charlotte Hardin was brutally raped and killed on the way back from an after school job. 12 years later they now know the perpetrator was Anthony Mitchell, 38, who happens to be in jail for other offenses and admits doing this.

The TV show 20/20 discovered because of insufficient funds police agencies could not afford to test the samples in rape kits. The evidence which would have solved Charlotte's case sat in a Baltimore police basement for 12 years until 20/20 called.

4 of the 50 kits which sat in a Baltimore precinct basement have been linked to matches in a DNA database. 20/20 states hundreds of thousands of kits in police stations sit untested.
