The leader of the Zapatista rebels in the Chaipas state of Mexico has indicated he will negotiate with the countries new President over ending the 7 year conflict.
Vicente Fox, who was inaugurated at the weekend, has promised to enshrine indigenous rights in Mexican law. This was a key demand of the rebels.
Fox had earlier ordered the army back to its barracks in Chaipas and to take down roadblocks there. The leader of the rebels welcomed this move as "a sign of greater commitments to come."
