Over 250 people were arrested at one party in an affluent area of Iran's capitol, Tehran, because they violating religious laws on New Year's Eve.

Iran's religious laws are harsh, but are rarely applied, but in this case most people were either consuming alcohol or wearing inappropriate clothes at the party. Both things are banned under religious law.

A large number of people had gathered outside the jail where the people were being held, but were dispersed by police. Most of those detained have been now let free with either a large fine or lashes.
