The supermarket chain Tesco has signed a deal with Cable & Wireless. "Tesco Telecom" is to be launched in the spring. The new service will not require the customer to sign contracts or to have any special equipment installed.
Sir Terry Leahy, chief executive of Tesco said: "Customers tell us they want a more convenient way to lower their phone bills. Because we think like retailers, not like a utility company, we will give customers supermarket-style offers."
Four years ago Tesco started its own financial service department with the Royal Bank of Scotland as its partner. Three million customers use this service, the hope is that the telecom deal will also do as well.
