Officials have determined that the stranded tanker "Jessica," which caused a massive oil spill to threaten the Galapagos Islands, cannot be moved. She will instead be converted into an artificial reef, home to marine life.
"Seals will start living on it, birds will begin perching on it. It has already attracted fish," said a Coast Guard chief. "Over time it will become a terrific place to dive. It's a new habitat. We have a new island in the Galapagos, Isla Jessica."
The ship cannot be moved due to a lack of proper equipment, and because of the severe deterioration of the hull. Since most of the oil has been removed or washed out to sea, there will be no further damage to the environment by letting it stay.
