A private group of scientists has announced they will start to attempt to clone humans within the next 12 - 24 months. However they would draw up strict ethical guidelines about human cloning.
They plan for the technology only to be applied to couples who cannot conceive babies by any other way and believe the cost could be as low as $10,000, or the same as for vitro fertilization. However they face strict opposition from other scientists.
"The chances of success are so low it would be irresponsible to encourage people to think there's a real prospect. The risks are too great for the woman, and of course for the child," says one UK scientist who was involved in cloning Dolly the sheep.
