"UFO Attack" on German City

Ufologists tricked the residents of the German city of Heilbronn into thinking they were under attack from "flying saucers". The UFOs were visible for 15 minutes.

Made of kite paper, the UFOs were balloons measuring 1.5 by 1.8m. Due to the material they exuded an "unearthly, orangey-red glow", said Werner Walter, head of national research network on extraordinary celestial phenomena.

Walter said: "It was like a Hollywood film. People were running outside, calling one another and discussing it in groups. There are things that we can't make sense of when we see them for the first time. But mostly there is a simple explanation..."

Yes... next time I see a UFO in the sky I shall turn to my bemused neighbour and say

"Don't be stupid Hans, its obviously made of kite paper, measuring roughly 1.5 by 1.8m. I'd say its because of the material they're made from that gives them that unearthly, orangey-red glow. You see Hans I told you there was a simple explanation"

Did this 'trick' have any meaning to it?
Was it simply a joke?

  The Point
Apparently, from what I've read, the point would be "just because you see something you can't explain, don't think it's an alien race coming to get you." It was probably also to show how gullible some people are, and how ready they are to believe that something they see is what they think it is, or what the group around them thinks.

like this though mean that if we ever do have contact with aliens people are just going to dismiss it as another hoax.

I think they meant simple as in relative to intergalactic travelling aliens that don't know/want to conceal their presence and like to fly in little patterns over cities.

First of all, no that is not simple in anyway. And second I've been searching for WTF a "Ufologist" is. Is it some sort of kite professor?
