87 prisoners attempted an escape during yesterday's visiting hours at Sao Paulo State Penitentiary in Brazil. The tunnel collapsed during the attempt and 8 prisoners are known to have died.
Spokeswoman Cida Goncalves said: The numbers we have now show 87 prisoners attempted to escape through a tunnel during visiting hours on Sunday afternoon. Those numbers may still change as more are recaptured and excavation work continues."
Police were tipped off by residents reporting mud and sewage-soaked prisoners exiting manholes in the middle of a main avenue. The tunnel had connected to a local sewer system.
