A new government-funded format called Enhanced Video Disc that will "attack the market share of DVD" is presented in China. Its developers since 1999 - E-World and On2, claim it can display HDTV images better than DVD using their new video codec VP6.
They say it shows faster decoding and better image quality than all current media players and it's free. The next step of China is to convince hardware manufacturers to switch from DVD to EVD and avoid patent payments.
Most of the widely used DVD players are made in China. No copyright protection on EVD is discussed so far. In China EVD players will cost about $240 compared to $85 DVD players.
