Russian Marat Safin, who lost in 2002's Australian Open final, celebrated his birthday today by beating top seeded Andy Roddick 2-6 6-3 7-5 6-7 6-4.
Roddick, the U.S. Open champion, slammed through the first set in 26 minutes, with Safin making one unforced error after the other.
Safin regained his composure to take the second and third set. Roddick came back to take the fourth, but Safrin took the deciding 5th set. The match lasted three hours and 23 minutes.
