PAK1 Logo Upsets Asians

The logo on a new range of clothes is upsetting the Pakistani community in Peterborough, UK, because it reads 'PAK1'. Designer Abdul Rahim, himself of Pakistani origin, says he wants to claim back the 'paki' meaning and not use it as a racial slur.

Rahim said "Pakistan means land of the pure, so to be called a 'paki' is to be called 'the pure'. Somehow.....the racists hijacked this word for their own uses and abuses, and our elders, and society in general allowed them to do so."

But Ghulam Shabbir of the Pakistan Community Association is not so sure: "They look at it as a negative remark, something that was used as an insult towards them, rather than something which was positive."
