Hubble Finds New Galaxy

The doomed Hubble space telescope has discoverd a new galaxy so faraway that its light takes 13 billion light years to reach Earth.

"The galaxy we have discovered is extremely faint, and verifying its distance has been an extraordinary challenging adventure," said astronomer Jean-Paul Kneib, of the California Institute of Technology.

The Keck observatory in Hawaii confirmed Hubble's findings, which were made using its "gravitational lensing", based on Einstein's theory of relativity and announced at the yearly meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

  One thing I don't get....

why is the Hubble Space telescope considered doomed? Cause its falling out of orbit?

As reported here at shortnews, the Hubble space telescope will no longer be maintained or repaired meaning it will stop sending data. Scientists have called for NASA to change their minds, but as of yet to no avail.

  one tiny point

gravitational lensing is actually a natural phenomenon predicted by Einstein and taken advantage of by the Hubble scope -- larger, nearby galaxies' gravity "tugs" the light of the newly discovered galaxy closer to Hubble, making it visible to the scope.

  Thx sb

I couldn't fit a complete explanation of an Einstein theory into a summery ;o)

  a question

there are alot of rumors starting up again that we never landed on the move and its hard not to believe them, why dint we ever go back? they say no money, but NASA has everything they want and more, also why couldnt they just point the Hubble at the moon and show us the flag, i'm sure if it can find a new galaxy it can sure look on the moon as its closer.
