EMI has been sending cease and desist letters to stop people from downloading Danger Mouse's "The Grey Album" which remixes Jay Z's "The Black Album" with the Beatles' "The White Album." Several web sites posted the album for download in defiance.
EMI owns the rights to the Beatles' catalog and they are informing Danger Mouse that he must stop selling the CD. EMI says they "authorize remixes all the time" and Danger Mouse could have used the right channels to get permission.
The Grey Album has been given good reviews by the Boston Globe and Rolling Stone. Some say one needs to belong to a major label in order to afford to get samples cleared like the ones Danger Mouse uses. For sites for the download, see the link.
