Some Programs May No Longer Work on Windows XP SP2

Microsoft is asking all software developers to test their applications on the beta version of Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. This is because the new service pack, designed to enhance security, may not be compatible with all existing applications.

Tony Goodhew of Microsoft says: "It may surprise some of the developers that we are changing some defaults, and that may affect the way some of the older applications run." Microsoft has started an online training course to help developers out.

Goodhew adds that applications that don't work on SP 2 are insecure. SP 2 will focus on browsing security, memory protection, network protection and email security. it is expected to debut sometime in the middle of this year.

  Absolulte development nightmare...

...As some of their "enhanced security features" break existing, shipping software, which is doing nothing wrong.

While I commend Microsoft for taking a more proactive approach to security, the automatic enablement of the built-in Windows Firewall, WITHOUT informing the user is bad, bad, bad.

This might be the one service pack from Microsoft that I don't "automatically" install.

  Meh

This is just a preview of the technology they plan to unveil in Windows Longhorn in 2005 or 2006. I'll install it (as a developer) just to see what it does, but you don't have to. Hell, most people I know still haven't installed SP1.

  Just a new reason ...

I still prefer to use Windows 98 (not trying to start another OS war thread, though I always enjoy them .. heh). While I admit Win XP has some improvements to it over Win 98, too much of my stuff is "too old" for Win XP. (Before any of you start ranting about the <sarcasm>wonderful</sarcasm> compatibility wizard for running stuff in Win XP I should point out that I still like to play some of my DOS games. ^_^ Also, you'd be surprised how many MS games (this may not be a fair accusation; MS games aren't really made by MS most of the time, but that's another story) don't work or don't work well in Win XP and there are no Win XP patches for those games =( ). Anyways, the idea that even more of my older stuff will suddenly stop working in Win XP doesn't thrill me. I hope that they at least attempt to keep some of the older "insecure" programs from not working. In spite of my hate for MS, I really wish they'd stop giving me NEW reasons to hate them.

  kettle, how black art thou?

"applications that don't work on SP 2 are insecure"? hmmmmm.... would that not nullify the OS itself? Last I checked most of the "insecure"ities were there to begin with. Perhaps if they actually beta tested their products more sufficiently PRIOR to release they wouldn't have so many problems. Seams all they did was take a decent OS (ie: NT),punch holes in the security of it for mass market, and make it more "pretty" so noone would care.

  Compatibility

You shouldn't really blame Microsoft for incompatibilities arising from an updated OS. Most of the blame lies squarely with the makers of the incompatible software.

Basically, Microsoft outlines programming conventions and rules in its software developers kits, and various books. Often, developers will ignore some of these rules and do things their own way, finding that their way works... then comes an OS update, and their bad programming now breaks the system.

I expect this will be shown most prevalently with memory protection issues, which were a major cause of incompatibilities when Win9X-developed software was run on NT/2k/XP based operating systems.

You know there is a DOS emulator for Windows XP called "DosBox" or something, right? I use it to play old-school DOS games flawlessly.

And on another note, I'd just like to point out what asshats the "M$" people are.

M$ Guy: "WTFz0rz why isn't your product teh secure?!111"

Microsoft: "Because we can't predict the future."

M$ Guy: "F1x0rz it j00 n00bs!"

Microsoft: "Fine fine. There. All of the current exploits and known attacks are patched."

M$ Guy: "WTF man?!?!! Why is your OS not teh backwards-compatible!!111111eleven"

Microsoft: *heavy sigh* "We just can't win."

Me: *shoots M$ Guy in the head for being such an ignorant, self-serving asshat*
