Doug Copp, who has traveled to worldwide disaster sites for nearly two decades and claims to have waded in "toxic soup" beneath the World Trade Center ruin to find bodies is being accused of lying and defrauding a victims' fund for $650,000.
A report in the Albuquerque Journal, which originally supported Copp, suggested a history of exaggeration and self-aggrandizement on Copp's behalf and said there was little evidence he rescued anyone. A Congressman has called for a federal inquiry.
Copp claimed that he found as many as 40 bodies from the Trade Center wrecks using a "death-detection device." A NYC fire chief said Copp's claims are "a fraud," adding that he would probably have arrested Copp if he'd known of his presence.
