480lb Woman Dies in Surgery to Remove her from Couch

600 pound Gail Grinds of Stuart, Florida is dead after surgeons tried in vain to remove her from a couch she was stuck in. It is possible that she was stuck in the couch from a period of 2 to 5 years. Authorities are wondering if neglect occurred.

Rescuers had to wear protective gear and pump in air to deal with the horrible stench in the air of the house. She was on the couch so long that her skin grafted with it. Thus, the rescuers used planks to place the couch on a trailer.

The trailer was needed because the ambulance was too small. The fire and rescue crews from Martin County arrived at the house because she reported that she had trouble breathing. They had to cut into the house to get her out.

  OMG

Who the hell fed her during the 2-5 years? Not to mention going to the bathroom/shower. I bet the stench was horrible. I'm amazed she wasn't rotting from peeing/crapping on herself for years.

  Slight Correction

According to the sorce, she was only 480 lbs not 600. She was married and had children, if i read correctly. But how would she go to the tolite?

The original story said 600lbs and the news source edited it, probably to make her family feel better?

Yes this is the norm in the US. I personally have a La-Z-boy recliner grafted to my 900 lb ass. And poopin is not a problem as you just stop doing it, that’s how I got to be 900 lb. I'm completly full of S... THIS IS SO ICKY!!!! ARUGGGG!!!!!!

  Doesn't that just remind you....

Of Jabba, the character from Star Wars? Poor lady, at least she's some place better now.

  About her weight...

Perhaps the original source included the weight of the couch in their estimates. After all, it was a part of her. And as for her being in a better place now...she's part of that big sofa in the sky.

  never understand this.

wait, what were they thinking? any of them? here you have a woman who's been stuck to a couch for six years, unable to even go to the bathroom by herself, apparently being provided enough food by the guy to maintain her at an extreme level of morbid obesity, and it smells so bad you can't go in there without gas masks... but none of this is a problem. no, they only called because she was having trouble breathing? wtf?

there's my other question. it takes a lot of calories to feed someone up to nearly 500 lbs. it's not as if the woman was sneaking into the kitchen in the dead of night, unless she was doing so with the couch trailing along behind her. why didn't the guy put her on a diet? feed her a little less? how could anyone just keep tossing pizzas and doughnuts over to jabba planted in the living room without at least calling a doctor and trying to find out if there was actually something medically wrong with her?

If it was my mum/wife, I'd empty the house of food and then go on holiday for a week, hiopefully she'd be at least a little lighter by then, if not, go again.
Jesus christ this is bloody disgustibng, and I'm eating a pot noodle

  insane

she must have been consuming... literally... 8000 calories a day to maintain that weight... its almost impossible to do...

stuck on the couch for 6 years!? thats... incredible... how do you do it? and her skin had grafted onto the sofa... that too is just so so wrong...

RIP couch-woman :\

  I don't get it.

I'm 6'0" and weigh around 130lbs. Yeah, I'm a skinny ass. When I see people who weigh in excess of 250lbs., I'm floored. To me, that's physically impossible. I don't understand how anyone could get like that. Let alone to the level of being grafted to your couch because you're such a fatass you can't get up. Maybe the guy feeding her is trying to recreate the movie Seven. Oh well, I don't really have a problem with fat people, other than their quite unattractive, especially when naked.

  well...

i'm about 6'2" and between 230-250 pounds. i can't immagine how much mobility i'd lose as double the that... although i would still be able to walk, fortunately i have good sturdy legs and can legs press 550 pounds.

how do you let yourself get to that point, seriously was she doing it for spite or laziness, neither is a good excuse.

  Agree Havoc

I should have clarified. The world's strongest men probably weight in close to 220-300, so what I meant to say his people who weigh around that much or more and have like 30% or more body fat. Football players weigh a lot and they aren't in the same condition. I modify my previous comment slightly.

  This woman had to have

more problems than just her weight. Somebody who can't or won't move around enough to keep the couch from growing to her ass? Somebody should have noticed the problem long before it got anywhere near that point. I blame her family/caregiver.
