California introduces law for Spyware

California has introduced a law to safeguard computer users personal information which is aimed at Spyware. Spyware is seen as one of the biggest threats to computer users.

The 'Consumer Protection Against Spyware Act' can lead to heavy fines against the companies that distribute Spyware. This is part of a trend towards privacy rights in California. The Act has been approved by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Washington is currently debating similar legislation with four bills being debated.

  Finally
It is about time there are some laws about spyware, etc. Yet most spyware should already be targetted by the virus laws. Most are essentially the same thing.

  Nice, but its not enough.
Unless spyware is made illegal like unsolicited spam I dont think its going to make that big of an impact. I think a smart thing would be to somehow make spyware legally treated as a type of virus. I mean hey, most spyware is just a trojan virus with a specific goal.

  Only good agsinst US makers
Our laws dont affect spyware from off the US shores. So yay for a law that won't really help us. Why not actually do something good instead of something flashy and unhelpful :|

  Um sure...
Its nice to see a state trying to get rid of Spyware with laws but sadly the truth is its pointless. Just like companies still sending spam they find loopholes. I mean my state Kentucky passed a No Call list to get rid of telemarketers. Sure it stoped about 5 or so of them. Just wish the other 20 callers would get the same idea!
