The Colombian government has handed the most prominent FARC leader being held in custody, Simon Trinidad, over to the United States, where he will face charges of abduction and drug trafficking. Trinidad was picked up from an airfield near Bogota.
Real name Ricardo Palmera, Trinidad was extradited last year from Equador and he was convicted of rebellion and kidnapping and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. He is being extradited for political reasons.
The government decided to extradite Trinidad to the United States after FARC rebels refused to release sixty hostages – including some US citizens and a former Colombian presidential candidate
