10-year-old British schoolgirl Tilly Smith has told The Sun newspaper in the UK how she recognised the warning signs of a tsunami while holidaying with her mother in Thailand last Sunday. Tilly’s class had learnt about tsunamis just before Christmas.
Smith said: "There were bubbles and the tide went out all of a sudden. I recognised what was happening and had a feeling there was going to be a tsunami. I told mummy." Her mother then alerted hotel workers and the beach was cleared.
Tilly and her mother were on Phuket when the deadly tsunami hit – and the beach they were holidaying on when Tilly alerted her mother to the behaviour of the ocean was one of the very few on the island where no-one died in the disaster.
