A student from Sydney University in Australia has fallen 50 metres to his death while rock climbing with a friend on New Zealand’s Mt. Aspiring on the south island. Marc Freedman was on holiday with another New South Wales man.
Freedman was a successful rockclimber and a member of Sydney University’s Rockclimbing and Mountaineering Club. His companion noticed he was missing at 10:30am on Saturday but was unable to contact police until 7pm.
Freedman’s body was recovered on Sunday. New Zealand police say that there is nothing to indicate that faulty equipment was to blame for the accident and it is thought that Freedman simply slipped on Aspiring’s icy surface.
