  This is the extreme...

Odd, never heard of Alzheimers victims being violent before. Based on the articles in readers' digest, etc by relatives of alzheimers, they're usually mild and harmless...

  Generally mild and harmless...

Like all generalisations there are exceptions. I know of one who is violent as well and it seems to be through frustration.

  I just love it when...

Two old folks get tired of each other and one offs the other one. There's probably a good 50 years of pissed off in that fireplace poker.

  Its not necessarily alzheimers

Alzheimers is just a form of dementia.
It could be any number of things.

  yeah

could be..but what are the possibilities?

  I work in Aged Care...

Trust me, people with dementia can get very violent, particularly if they don't get their own way. In my experience most don't but when they do... I've lost count of the number of times I've seen an old lady with dementia and long nails pinch or try to pinch one of my colleagues on the breast - usually because they don't want a shower. My worst was when I a dementia patient grabbed me by the nuts and squeezed hard. With this loss of inhibitions and access to a poker... I don't doubt it happened like it's reported.

No, much as I wanted to. There's far too much paperwork involved afterwards.

I have to agree with you about the “good 50 years of pissed off in that fireplace poker
“ or maybe it was just delayed “Postpartum Depression”.
