Pepsi pulls tsunami-ad

"In light of the recent tragedy in Asia, we ... have taken the decision to put our 2005 Surf themed football campaign on hold for the foreseeable future," a Pepsi spokesman has announced. Instead they donated £1m to a disaster relief fund.

The major campaign in question featured world star soccer heroes David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldinho and others. In one picture the stars are standing on a beach about to get hit by a giant wave.

Other companies, including British Airways and Marmite, have pulled inappropriate campaigns while some companies are suspected of stepping up their advertisements.

  This is asinine but logical
even though I think they just wasted a lot of money in the production of the ads

  It's all about the benjamins...
Pepsi knows that if they not only pull their million pound ad, but donate a million pounds instead, that it will be newsworthy event. They will get more PR value out of this move than if they aired the commercial.
