Scientists Debate if Mega-Tsunami Could Strike US

As previously reported, US and British scientists claim an eruption on the Canary Islands could trigger a "mega-tsunami" that could strike North America, the Caribbean, Western Europe, Brazil and W. Africa. A volcanic landslide would trigger this.

Many wave experts, however, say that such tsunamis from landslides are smaller than the ones generated by earthquakes. "Science of Tsunami Hazards" editor Charles Mader says a tsunami from La Palma hitting N. America wouldn't be over a meter high.

But, Bill McGuire, of the UK-based Benfield Hazard Research Center, says the model predicting an Atlantic mega-tsunami is still correct. If scientists agree on anything, it is that the community before underestimated the dangers of tsunamis.

It WILL happen. And Hawaii will get the other side

Canary Island is a land slide off a volcano. Same problem with one of the hawaii islands. Has this big toe nail like rock formation just waiting to drop. That one in hawaii looks like it will be first.

Now they know about this threat and will do Dick-all about it. They could blow it themselves cause you would at least know when unlike what happend in Asia. There will be a tsunami so don't let the politicians lie when it finally wipes out New York. They could have done something about it now, NOW NOW NOW. I'll take 10 little tsunamis instead of the Big one it will do. Controlled explosions.

But I doubt this will happen, many will die and it could have been stopped. Remember that in the years to come. And the guys incharge will shrug their shoulders as to say "What could we do?"

Such blatent disregard for cander makes you look like much more of a **** than someone who posts a possible solution to a very real and very deadly problem.

you are the moron. Ericcode was making a valid observation.

One thing is certain: disaster will strike again! (how's that for a brilliant observation?)

There are an infinite number of things that can happen at any time to wipe out large segments of the human population.... we are already doing a good job of hurting ourselves with pollution, war, and McDonalds. So, when the next big asteroid hits the earth, an arctic shelf falls into the ocean, huge storm systems come ashore, or the next disease pandemic hits.... people like Sepiroth will just sit by the tv and get squished....

Sadly can't read his comment anymore but the guy has a name after a Final Fantasy VII character - you can guess his mental age can't you?

I love people who like to pretend all is well in the world and will be for the duration of their little lives when the truth is anything but. The world suffers terribly, we continue to destroy it and we stand on the brink of pretty much the end. If we don't do it, a natural disaster will. I personally predict we will do it first though, or at the very least give the environment a good nudge in doing so. Who takes environmental protection seriously these days? I bet they will when they realise they are about to die and think 'you know what, why didn't we prioritise those issues when electing our political leaders?'

Although the environment stil takes a battering, it would take a huge ultimate disaster to wipe humanity off the face of the earth. Afparently we survied iceages in the past with only sticks and stones and caves. And scientists predict that it would take one hell of a large thing from space to destroy or make uninhabitalble a substantual enough area to kill off all humans. I think that humans will never die out until the either earth implodes/explodes, the sun goes out, Total Neuclear war, massive toxic dumping into ocean and atmosphere.

Offtopic: a comet or asteroid with a relatively small diameter will be sufficient to exterminate mankind or take us back to the Stoneage, depending on composition, angle, speed and place of impact.

  Maybe....

it will take a massive event to destroy life on Earth and unless the earth was totally destroyed eventually more would evolve.

It would not take such a event to wipe humanity from the earth..... Hell, we may even do it to ourselves...
