New research has found that the herbal extract that comes from the root of butterbur can help lessen the frequency of migraines – headaches that can completely incapacitate a sufferer for a day or more.
The study was held at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY and 230 people were tested. They were separated into three groups, two of which were given different doses of the extract and the third was given a placebo.
All those involved had experienced regular migraines in the three months leading up to the study. The number of migraines a month went down by 45% in the group that took 75 milligrams of the extract and 32% in the group given 50 milligrams.
