Malawati from Indonesia survived 5 days in the ocean after the tsunami before being found alive. Her survival has been described as miraculous. Doctors in Malaysia have now announced that she is 18 weeks pregnant.
Malawati, who is in her early twenties, didn't tell her rescuers that she was pregnant because she had assumed that the ordeal had caused her to lose the baby. "I'm very glad, very happy," she said after hearing the pregnancy was intact.
She survived in the ocean by clinging to a sago palm trunk and eating its fruit and bark. "I slipped twice but managed to hold on," she said. "I saw sharks around me but prayed they wouldn't hurt me." Her husband is still missing.
