Sony PSP Debuts in the US

Sony debuted its PlayStation Portable in Las Vegas yesterday, hotting up the portable game market even more. The PSP will go into direct competition with the Nintendo DS when it is finally available for sale.

No prices were given at the PSP launch, which took place on the eve of the Consumer Electronics Show which starts today. Sony executives did say the PSP will hit US stores by March this year, but didn’t say how many would be available.

Nintendo currently holds 98% of the portable gaming market.

Sony and Nintendo disagree, not in direct competit

ion. And besides, nintendo also stated that the ds is a "third pillar" to their existing consoles which means there probably will be a GBA 2.

  Sony heating things up!

Nintendo holds 98% yes. One reason is because they never had any real competition. Sega had their GameGear but that was it. Sony PSP will heat things up though for sure. With their Playstation 2 still holding sales pretty high and the PSP being a min port of that system makes for a good boiler. DS only being a port of the 64 is a downer but Nintendo is and will always be about pure gameplay. For the price of PSP, GamePro suggest it will most likely cost the price of the Playstation 2 on its first release. PSP already stated to have mp3 playback, wireless internet, and video playback will truelly make Nintendo use all of DS's features to the max. SquareEnix has a tough situation know though but PSP will be big for its UMD release of FF7:Advent Children. Nintendo finally has a new competitor. The battle has begun and the war is far from over.
