Jerry Springer Opera Sets New Complaints Record

Even before its UK TV premiere, Jerry Springer - The Opera has generated 5,500 complaints, three times more than the previous record holder (the Martin Scorsese film The Last Temptation of Christ).

15,000 calls to the BBC have been received, complaining about some of the 8,000 obscenities contained in the talkshow adaptation. Included is a scene involving Jesus wearing a nappy and admitting to being "a bit gay".

The National Secular Society is one group taking a stand against what it regards as "religious bullies" and it wants to prevent what it sees as "attempts by religious interests to control what we can see or say in this country".

  They're just scared

we might have to make up our minds about what's true and false, as opposed to the secularists spoon-feeding us what we want. Air all of the bullshit: pro-jesus, anti-jesus, and let US decide.

The great thing about Christianty is

That unlike other religions it can be looked at, criticized, made satire out of etc etc

Unlike virtually every other religion on earth which cries and whines whenever anyone questions it.

Cutting off thier nose to spite thier face?

They are not going to stop this but instead they are helping promote it, and doing it for free. You can buy this kind of press. If I were the producers I wouls send stripper and hookers over to thier head quarters for a thank-you show of gratitude.

  Update - the lying Christians

I couldn't quite work out how anyone could fit 5,500 swear words into an opera, but now I know why - those tell-no-lie 'Christian' complainers have taken the 140 swear words and multiplied them by 40 (the number of singers in the choir).

Be scared, Christians. I thought I saw lightning.......

It should *not* have been shown

The bbc code promises not to screen anything that is seen as out and out offensive by religious groups.

5,500 complaints, 15,000 calls. This Opera has clearly offended Christians and should not have been shown.

I'm all for freedom of speech, but this is double standards. An advert for perfume was cancelled after it got 11 complaints?

5,500 people complain (the highest ever amount of complaints over a broadcast in the history of the UK) and the bbc ignores them all and screens it, hypocrisy, double standards and wrong.

As a non practicing Catholic i found the Opera very amusing indeed, but i still say it shouldn’t have been in light of the complaints.
