Even before its UK TV premiere, Jerry Springer - The Opera has generated 5,500 complaints, three times more than the previous record holder (the Martin Scorsese film The Last Temptation of Christ).
15,000 calls to the BBC have been received, complaining about some of the 8,000 obscenities contained in the talkshow adaptation. Included is a scene involving Jesus wearing a nappy and admitting to being "a bit gay".
The National Secular Society is one group taking a stand against what it regards as "religious bullies" and it wants to prevent what it sees as "attempts by religious interests to control what we can see or say in this country".
