Manchester District Judge John Finestein took the unusual step today of naming a convicted child. Jon Smee, 13, of Thursfield Street in Cromwell, Salford, Greater Manchester was jailed by the judge for 4 months.
Smee had pleaded guilty to drink-driving in a stolen car, in which he reached the speed of 70 mph in a 30 mph restricted area. Smee almost hit a pedestrian before hitting a curb and losing control of the car.
Smee had several former convictions, and had been banned from driving before. The judge said he named the boy in the hope public awareness would be raised and Spee would be stopped from re-offending.
