Judge Names And Jails 13-Year-Old Drink-Driver

Manchester District Judge John Finestein took the unusual step today of naming a convicted child. Jon Smee, 13, of Thursfield Street in Cromwell, Salford, Greater Manchester was jailed by the judge for 4 months.

Smee had pleaded guilty to drink-driving in a stolen car, in which he reached the speed of 70 mph in a 30 mph restricted area. Smee almost hit a pedestrian before hitting a curb and losing control of the car.

Smee had several former convictions, and had been banned from driving before. The judge said he named the boy in the hope public awareness would be raised and Spee would be stopped from re-offending.

  THIS KID IS ALREADY HEADING DOWN HILL
 NT
 by: thedrewman   01/06/2005 11:25 PM
  Re: Down hill
 Regardless of that, he's only 13 and he's getting sentenced to jail for four months. Sending a kid to jail allows him to mix with hardcore criminals who may decide to teach him more tricks of the criminal trade - I don't believe that's a good idea as that could have been what led him downhill in the first place.

  @jondracusjl
 yeah, you're right. He should probably just be executed now. Who knows how many lives would be saved?

  He won't be sent to jail
 He'll be sent to a young offenders insitute, they're hardly gonna stick him in the slammer.

  good idea
 Maybe a good idea to send him to an adult jail for a few hours... maybe send a shock though the kid. srt him straight see whats ahead for him... But i want to know where thr kid is getting the alcohol from if hos parents know he is drinking then they shouldn't have it available at all.

  Bigger problem
 How about finding where a 13 year old got the alcohol and prosecuting the supplier???? I'm sick of hearing people bang on about making the prices or drinks prohibitively high because it is, supposedly, aimed at children. If no one is gonna sell them the booze, they can't get it. Unless their parents do, in which case, prosecute them for neglet. Put more pressure on the distributors and stop the UK gov making more revenue by raising prices.
