Possible Al Qaeda Threat To Indonesian Relief Effort

Laskar Mujahidin, an extremist Islamic organisation with links to Al Qaeda, have moved into tsunami-hit Aceh province in Indonesia and is said to pose a potential threat to the relief effort being conducted there.

They are known for attacking Christians elsewhere in Indonesia and is reported to already be in contact with Aceh refugees, teaching them Islamic lessons as well as removing corpses and distributing food.

The group was once headed by cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, currently on trial as the suspected leader of Al Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah. A Laskar Mujahidin member said their presence will remain humanitarian as long as foreign involvement is the same.

  Al Qaeda POTENTIAL threat?

I think they are capable of doing anything they want because it's loose coalition of muslim extremists, many of them brainwashed into their beliefs or manipulated into it commiting crimes.

There are already huge numbers of child-trafficking crimes being committed post-tsunami. Pretty heinous stuff....

But it does say 'potential'. That makes the entire piece 'iffy'- there is a 'potential' for anything, and who knows what criminals will be branded terrorists for political activities in the area.

As for operatives in the area, they are probably too concerned about their own survival too go about threatening people.

speculation, nothing more...

In reality I think its beyond speculation. Consider the facts:

An Al Qaeda-linked terrorist group which has a history of killing Christians in Indonesia is setting up camp alongside the US and Indonesian armed forces relief effort. The Islamic militants are spreading the word of their religion while helping the locals. What do you think is likely to happen? Just because it hasn't happened YET doesn't mean that its not a story. Its gonna kick off in the next few months, no doubt about it, unless the US keeps a VERY low profile, preferably staying off-shore.

  i actually

believe them. they re trying to regain political favor right now within their own community, and i is not unprecidented for a terrorist group to also give help in times of disaster. take hamas for example, they are one of the better known terrorist groups around, and they open hospitals, schools, ect, thats why they have great popularity among the palestinians, maybe al-queda are taking the que from them

  Al Qaeda

have been using the advantages open to them provided by poverty for years already. In Africa, for example, they are busy converting the people who the West want to ignore. Thats why large Muslim populations are expanding in places such as Nigeria. Africa, it has been said, is the next continental battleground for anti-terrorism work and I believe the US has CIA teams in there now because of the threat. In a country such as Indonesia (the largest Muslim population in the world) Al Qaeda can hardly fail.
