Former world number one Kim Clijsters has been forced to withdraw from the Australian Open because of an ongoing wrist injury. Clijsters had surgery on her left wrist in May last year and made a failed comeback in September.
Clijsters is ranked 22nd in the world despite the fact that she hardly played last season. A statement on her Web site said: "Kim doesn't feel like putting too much stress on the joint that early and wants to avoid any possible risk."
Clijsters plans to come back on the 14th of February, at the Antwerp Proximus Diamond Games.
