According to a report by a UN watchdog, United Nation peacekeepers in Congo sexually abused women and girls as young as 13. The Office of Internal Oversight Services said the problems were “serious and ongoing”.
"It was clear that the investigation did not act as a deterrent for some of the troops, perhaps because they had not been made aware of the severe penalties...," the report read. The soldiers paid for the sex with food and/or small amounts of money.
“In six cases, the allegations against the peacekeepers were fully substantiated, and underage girls were involved in all of them,” the report said. None of the peacekeeping soldiers involved in the incidents have admitted any crime.
