Microsoft Releases Beta Anti-Spyware Tool

A trial version of a free anti-spyware tool to increase the security of the Windows operating system is being made available on a Microsoft web site.

The beta product was acquired last month with the purchase of Giant Company Software, Inc.

Spyware and viruses are intrusive programs that hinder computer performance and security.

A virus-removal tool is expected in the very near future.

It is anticipated that these products mark the entry of Microsoft into the computer security market.

Symantec and McAfee share prices declined following the announcement.

If you want something done right
 do it your self.

But now they will have no one else to blame and can't send customers on phone circles to Symantec or McAfee and back.

Microsoft just gets bigger and bigger
Hmmm.. I thought all this anti-trust monopoly etc stuff was to stop Microsoft from abusing their position in computing to gain the upper hand over everyone else and now someone let them enter the Security market. No doubt this will mean that all future versions of Windows will come with this anti-spyware tool automatically installed and automatically running so end users will believe its safe and cause other Security firms like Norton and McAfee to struggle. One good thing I wouldn't trust any security product from MS considering their attitude to security in the past - hmmm... let's make internet explorer able to run EXE files automatically with just a little tick box option (oh yeah that's were all viruses come from great idea!)

Conflicts possible with Adaware, SpyBot, Spy Sweeper, etc.??

Use at your own risk! ;-)

  New My Ass
It's nothing more than "Giant Anti-Spyware" with Microsoft's name on it.

  Conflicts?
It only conflicts with other spyware detection software if you have them running in on-access mode. Most people with any degree of common sense don't.

  Who needs Micro$oft anyway...?
It's only an Anti-Spyware tool. Why should I buy this, if Ad-Aware and Search&Destroy are sufficient and free? Same goes for ZoneAlarm, OpenOffice, FireFox and Linux. (If I get a change to get that @#%$ ADSL-modem working in my Suse Linux64 OS. Not geek enough.) So, who buys software nowadays? This tool won't affect firms like McAfee and Symantec. After all, they develop anti-virus software. And Micro$oft will come up with that one as well. This is of course only on Consumer and SOHO market. But on Business market it's different...If they only could get a change to get rid of their well-known bad reputation regarding security... I'll wonder how many people will switch from software. But in the end, it will all be installed on your 500GB hard disk with the succesor of Windows XP. And hell, it even connects to your television, thanks to the new Media Center. Aaaargh....!

  Since I stopped using IE
my adaware and spybot searches always turn up nothing. I have two great programs, that are free and work great, I don't need to install a bloated, branded piece of software on my hdd as well that does the same thing.

  Microsoft Last in the Race
A spyware/adware detector?! WOW! Geesh come on this is old news to most of use already having such programs. Microsoft says its free too but for how long? Just goes to show that Microsoft is yet again tailing the bandwagon.

  This is just plain
bad, microsoft crap is already riddled with security holes...now they want to (eventually) sell us stuff to sweep out the malware that gets in through those holes. Anyone see a problem with this, or maybe a conflict of interest? How many security holes are going to be put in on purpose now to get people to buy the latest update for MS anti-virus/spyware remover? At the very least I can see the MS anti-virus/anti-spyware update out at least a week before they allow the OS patch (if they even make one availible).
