Michelin's "Tweel" Has No Air Pressure

Tire manufacturer Michelin have released details of its new "Tweel". A Tweel is a combined tire and wheel without air pressure. It has been developed in the company's US technology centre in Greenville.

Terry Gettys, president of Michelin Americas Research said: "Tweel has proven its potential to transform mobility. Tweel enables us to reach levels of performance that quite simply aren't possible with today's conventional pneumatic technology."

The prototype was demonstrated by Michelin mounted on a Audi A4. A factor 5 increase in lateral stiffness by Michelin made the Tweel very responsive in their handling.

Something similar was proposed for bicycle tyres years ago. Saw an article about it in either Popular Science or Popular Mechanics magazine.
