Anti-Terrorist Funding Buys Texans Racing Lawnmower Equipment

Texas, home-turf of the U.S. President George W. Bush, has been caught in a corruption scandal concerning the state's $600 million anti-terrorist funding. The state used money to buy a trailer to haul lawnmowers to drag-races.

Following an audit of the grant-provisions to several Texan cities, investigators uncovered several questionable purchases including possible traffic-lights and funding for community festivals, as well as the purchase of the trailer.

The Texas Engineering Extension Service, which distributes the grant money, claims it has done a good job overall; the State auditors are still forwarding their case to their special fraud investigation unit.

  Holy Crap

  One Question Though..
 Why did you add the bush comment?
 by: robbob     01/09/2005 12:24 PM
  Only in Texas
 BTW, Why in the hell race lawnmowers when they could just build gokarts?

  @Theironboard
 Bush is NOT a Texan. He carpetbagged to TX. There's a difference there
 by: jondracusjl   01/09/2005 01:03 PM
  The Bush Ranch....
 President Bush has a home in Texas and he was a governor there.

.... and it's the money from his administration that funds the anti-terrorist grant.

The implication here is that the people who are abusing the grant-money might be influenced by the knowledge that the current US leader was their former governor... if this happened in Alaska I wouldn't have said anything.

Am I wrong?

(Thanks for the questions-- not looking to start a debate but do hope people look at this issue carefully even if it is a bit preposterous that someone would use anti-terrorist funds to buy a lawnmower racing trailer.)

  Not Bush
 I think its kind of silly to think that President Bush has nothing better to do than micromanage local spending in a state. Your corruption here would be local or county, not even state. State regulators are most likely the ones who found the stupid spending.

 I would take out "Texas, home-turf of the U.S. President George W. Bush" It has nothing about this in the link!!!! Your just trying to make more propaganda against Bush on this site!

  It's odd...
 that most posters here get upset that their beloved Führer Bush being (wrongly?) mentioned in the article, in stead of the fact that their tax money is waisted on lawn mower equipment.
 by: Fonzo   01/10/2005 12:03 AM
  Maybe...
 Those of you who thought this was a bash on bush should read thing's more carefully as it mentions that it's just his home state.

theironboard clearly states in his comment that he believes the people responsible thought that they could get away with it because bush is president not that bush orchestrated the whole thing.

Sadly Fonzo you're right.

These people seem to care more about the president's image then the fact that all that money that was supposed to help protect people was used in frivolous activities and seemingly to catch up on some other unfinished government jobs.

  @Fonzo
 "Führer Bush"

The fact that you went ahead and put a real umlaut in there made that even more hilarious than it was.

  well, at least...
 it's going to something that the public could concievably enjoy, rather than a $500,000 party for employees last year, wich included a $1500 cheese sculpture, and the conference in hawaii. apparently terrorisim is now defined as the department of homeland security being bored, if so theyre doing a good job

  Better spent that way anyway....
 What were they going to do anyway?

Some more posters asking you to spy on your neighbours?

At least people will get enjoyment from it now.

  Thankyou for seeing past my mild obfusication
 Some of you have analyzed my reporting the news exactly right. By the way, are we supposed to blindly reiterate the news trying to avoid plagarism, or add insights and connections as webreporters?

As I suggsted earlier-- the Texans seem to have been caught being under the influence of power.

What is the old saying: 'Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts Texans...'?

By the way, for an amazing way to lose faith in humanity, and to waste a few minutes- do a websearch on lawnmower racing. It's scary.

  They were antiterrorism lawn mowers (n/t)

 by: Mister crank     01/11/2005 04:03 PM
  Cool.
 We need better equipment for lawnmower racing. The sponsors ignore the sport so they don't really have any funding. Well besides the US government.
I would rather the money spent on racing lawnmowers than housing for people who don't work.

  Toby,
 What does housing for homeless people have to do with Anti-Terrorism funding?
 by: fballer23   01/11/2005 08:40 PM
  @fballer
 what sense does any of my comments make?
