The US military has released a statement apologising for the bombing of the wrong target in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. The US carried out an air strike against a house in Aaytha, demolishing it completely. Locals say 14 died, the US says 5.
"The house was not the intended target for the air strike. The intended target was another location nearby," the statement said. "An investigation is under way to determine the facts regarding this incident."
The house was hit by a 250kg precision-guided bomb dropped by a F-16 jet. The incident happened while US forces were looking for a suspected insurgent leader early this morning.
