US Strikes Wrong Target in Iraq

The US military has released a statement apologising for the bombing of the wrong target in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. The US carried out an air strike against a house in Aaytha, demolishing it completely. Locals say 14 died, the US says 5.

"The house was not the intended target for the air strike. The intended target was another location nearby," the statement said. "An investigation is under way to determine the facts regarding this incident."

The house was hit by a 250kg precision-guided bomb dropped by a F-16 jet. The incident happened while US forces were looking for a suspected insurgent leader early this morning.

  What I liked is....
 1) The US knows exactly how many were killed according to them but yet didn't know who it was.
2) They can't even admit a mistake directly as it says 'possibly innocent lives'
I see intelligence hasn't improved any.

  "precision guided"
Which I guess means someone pointed their laser at the wrong building....
 by: Eidron   01/09/2005 05:18 PM
I imagine how those army guys...
could cope with that stuff, i mean they just "killed" 14 people out-of-a a stupid mistake, i wonder if they sleep at night!
 by: rampulstinski   01/09/2005 05:54 PM
  Well
the pilot probably never knew his target, and the guy on the ground will probably think "well they were probably bad people anyway".

  With..
...so many civilians (16000+) dead this administration should be apologizing a lot more.
 by: Kaleid   01/09/2005 08:13 PM
  will anybody
at least give them credit for admitting it, and not trying to cover it up? in wars mistakes happen, and dont give me that in this age of technoligy crap, does your computer always work right? why do you expext better from weapons systems, yes, they are tested, but nothing works right 100% of the time. its tradgic, it sucks, but thats war. get over it. its already done, and cant be changed, but the fact they didnt try to cover it up gives them more creditability in the matter. and with satelite photos they can tell by infrared how many people are there, thats how they know haw many, but not who.

  But for..
..every happening that get's a lame excuse 20 won't get nothing.
 by: Kaleid   01/10/2005 12:37 AM
  whoops.
Let's see-- there was the French Embassy in Libya back in 84, then the Chinese Embassy in Kosovo (I think) in the 90s....

This is what happens when you give tanks and planes to kids in their late teens and early 20s.

A lot of this 'precision-guided' bombing is done with the aid of a soldier on the ground pointing a guiding laser at the target and the bombers just release the missiles. This was done to great effect in Desert Storm....

I am suprised they even offered an apology... they must have been really off. Usually they don't express any regrets.

  @Ganga
Well a big difference here would be that I do not spend billions of dollars programming my computer to exact specifacations, we probably didn't strike the "wrong" target, it was probably was the target of the strike, we just had "bad intel", and there was only civilians in it.
 by: fballer23   01/10/2005 03:49 PM
  why...
do we apologize? I haven't heard any apologies from that side of the world. Plus, Saddam killed his OWN all of the time. Do you think he apologized? Our government is way too kind.

  F**k the USA
Funny story - Shortly after the WTC attacks, I Googled the web for the lyrics to the Exploited song "Fu*k the USA", and they had been excised from every place that they had been posted to. Such was the extent of world sympathy. Now, you put it into the engine and it's everywhere. Nice job, George.

  Yes nice job George
We are showing the world that we will stand up by ourselves for ourselves and have the ability to do it.
Thanks George for the soar of jobs too. Man I got a promotion and more money as did many I know. Thanks George!
He is reversing most of our outsourcing of jobs ..thanks George.
I watch the news and I see the bombing in the middle east and not in t he US...thanks George.

  Don't forget
Importing/legalizing Mexican workers and pushing to cut Social Security by 33%.
 by: treyjazz   01/11/2005 05:50 PM
  Mexican workers
were already working and making money in the US...now they will just be paying taxes. thanks George!
 by: TOBYKIETH     01/11/2005 05:54 PM
  True
There would be more of a chance that more would pay income tax but on the other hand the illegals turned citizens would be eligible for welfare, etc (even moreso tha n now).
 by: treyjazz   01/11/2005 06:21 PM
  Most of 'em....
are paid under the table, you think that will change? Still no income tax. Thanks Bush for destroying the middle class even more.
 by: lurker     01/11/2005 06:26 PM
So if him making an attempt
to have them work legally in the US and pay taxes is wrong. Then just to do nothing would have been better? What is your suggestion?
This just goes to show that no matter what Bush does he is going to be ridiculed.

 by: TOBYKIETH     01/11/2005 06:29 PM
  Ummmm TOBY
New jobs aren't being created, people are being fired and replaced with cheaper workers, outsourcing hasn't stopped, mexicans now just come here instead of the factory coming to them.
 by: fballer23   01/11/2005 06:39 PM
I don't know what part of the US
you are in..but this part is flourishing under Bush. There isn't enough people for the jobs here. Not to mention the salaries have all increased.
According to Newsweek the job market is the best it has ever been since 1999. That is saying alot according to what our nation has been through. I don't think we can have a better president or govt officials. Thanks George.

 by: TOBYKIETH     01/11/2005 07:08 PM
  Salary Increase.
I know I got my 3.5% (Yes!). A manager at McDonalds still makes more than me though. Thanks, George.
