Sudanese President Ali Osman Mohammed Taha and John Garang, chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army, signed a peace deal today which is aimed at calling an end to the country's long civil war. The deal has taken 8 years to work out.
The Sudan civil war has been raging since 1983 and has cost approximately two million lives. Most of the deaths were caused by famine and disease which were attributed to the war.
The peace talks were held in neighbouring Kenya, where the deal was also signed during a lavish ceremony.
