Partial results in yesterdays election in Palestine show that Mahmoud Abbas has been elected as the president of the Palestinian Authority by a landslide. Abbas is backed by most of the international community and even Israel welcomed his election.
Israel did say, however, that they will be keeping a close eye on Abbas to see how well he deals with militants. Election officials said today that Abbas won 65% of the vote. The figure is based on the results in 10 of the 16 electorals.
The Hamas militant group announced after the victory declaration that they were willing to work with Abbas.
