North American 2005 Car and Truck of the Year Announced

The 2005 Car of the Year and the 2005 Truck of the Year have been announced at the North American International Motor Show in Detroit. The Daimler 300/300C took Car of the Year, while the Ford Escape Hybrid was named Truck of the Year.

The accolades are awarded by a panel of 48 motor and industry journalist, who whittle down the list of finalists based on safety, ride and handling, value for the dollar and innovation. The list had been reduced to three in each category.

It is the second year in a row that a hybrid vehicle was awarded a title – in 2004 the Toyota Prius won North American Car of the Year.

  No
The 2005 model year starts in September 2004. I have no idea why, but if you buy a new car in the last three months of the year, it's the next years "model year".

There are lots of awards that do this....
I think that its daft.... Even when you have awards half way through the year.

Maybe it because they don't want a slew of award ceremonies all at the same time in Jan/Feb/Mar with no celebrities and nothing in the hot sunny months when the celebrities like to go to these ceremonies for people to praise them.

We even have cities of culture. Glasgow is 2007, I think, what quite happens if we get there and it hasn't changed into a city with culture I don't know. Maybe I'm missing the point....
