Italian Ban On Smoking Begins

A ban on smoking in public starts in Italy today. The new law prohibits smoking in bars, restaurants, discotheques and offices. The only places left to smoke legally are private homes, the open air or marked smoking areas.

Italy is also spending on plain clothed police to monitor the law, with them patrolling Italy's 240,000 eating and drinking establishments. The country's trade association (FIP) says that only 5% of these establishments have separate smoking rooms.

Health Minister Girolamo Sirchia said: "It's not inspired by the idea of prohibition. It's to protect against passive smoking." The law has seen opposition from the Defense Minister, who said: "I've been smoking since age 18.. it's my sacred right."

  Good

I wish they would do that in America, I hate smelling nasty second hand smoke in restaurants.

  Yeah I agree

I know both sides of this because I used to be a smoker. Now cigarette smoke bothers me a lot though (asthma, allergies). I know that when I was a smoker I didn't have much regard for others and thought it was my right. But now I realize how much of a jackass I was to think that. I'm very glad that a couple years ago smoking bans went into effect in all the restaurants in my city. At first it hurt some smaller businesses slightly but not too long afterward it increased in all of the restaurants that allowed smoking. Smokers should be allowed to smoke themselves to death if they wish but not other people.

  Got to agree too

If someone wants to do drugs I don't care. If they do drugs and drive then I care because they are putting others at risk. It is quite clear that smoking does put people at risk if someone chooses to smoke then that is their choice, but I should not have to breath their smoke. If it takes laws and smoking police then so be it. Of course I think America might need to worry more about their homocide rate before they hire smoking police!

  Disagree

It doesn't take laws, or police. IT takes people being brave enough to walk out fo a resturant when theya re "offended" by smoking. I'm a non-smoker. People don't smoke in my house. But to let new laws regulate what people do, we are taking our power of protest out of our hands in favor of laws that will be abused or not enforced. Stupid if you ask me. IF someone is smoking ina resturant you like, get up and leave, and make sure the manager knows why. THAT will be more effective in the long run, not more laws.
